  ORGANIST/CHOIR DIRECTOR

In United Methodist policy and practice, the pastor is responsible for planning and conducting all aspects of worship; this is generally done in collaboration with paid staff and with designated lay worship leaders. Brooklyn Memorial UMC is seeking someone willing to work on developing & leading a youth/children’s choir. We are seeking someone with spiritual gifts of teaching, leading, and growing in musical ministry.

Consult the pastor in preparation for musical ministry.

Coordinate anthems and special music with the worship service. This is accomplished by meeting on a regular basis with pastor: At least monthly, to coordinate & plan appropriate musical selections. At least weekly, to confirm order and content of all music in the worship service.

Rehearse with the choir on a regular basis: At least weekly, for at least 45 minutes. Schedule additional rehearsals for special music (particularly Advent, Christmas, Easter, or any occasion with planned special music in addition to hymns and an anthem)

Instruct and direct the choir: Provide instruction required to assure choir members are performing music accurately, with confidence, in tune and in time, harmoniously and together in tempo, to the best of their ability.

Play music in tune and in time.

Have ready an approved “back-up” plan, in the event of poor choir attendance (too few to perform selected anthem).

Be prepared with prelude and offertory selections.

Be prepared for the flow of the service, taking cues from the pastor/ worship leader.

Attendance: Appreciating the importance of music in the worship service, and the dependence on the organist/pianist support, it is crucial that as much advance notice as possible be provided in the event time off is required. Planned or anticipated absences should be communicated at least one week in advance.

Optional participation in musical preparation for contemporary worship service.

Share ideas and participate in an open communication circle.

Applicants can email their resume & letter of interest to me at the jjk954@hotmail.com  or “snail mail” that information to Staff Pastor Parish Team, Brooklyn Memorial UMC, 2607 Archwood Ave, Cleveland, OH 44109.
