Federal Hire act Could Cut Costs for Employers
Employers who hired unemployed workers this year (after
Feb. 3, 2010 and before Jan. 1, 2011) may qualify for a 6.2 percent
payroll tax incentive. In effect, this exempts the employer from
their share of Social Security taxes on wages paid to these workers from
March 18, 2010 to December 31, 2010. Employers would still need to
withhold the employee's 6.2 percent share of Social Security taxes, as
well as income taxes. The employer and employee's share of
Medicare taxes would also still apply to these wages. A statement
from the employee certifying that he or she has not been employed
full-time in the 60 days proceeding hiring, or worked less than 40 hours
in the last 60 days, will be required. This form is IRS From W-11.
